Education Student Finds Welcoming Environment at Blackhawk

Teachers can have a profound impact, and for Madisin Parmer, an Evansville native in Blackhawk’s Foundations of Teacher Education program, the teachers she had growing up inspired her to be an educator and have the same positive influence on her own students that set her on this path.

Beyond the affordability of Blackhawk, which Madisin saw as a big plus, she wanted to be close to her family and be able to help out when they needed it. She also found the College to be welcoming and has since discovered the staff is always willing to help. She credits them with getting her where she needs to be.

Her instructor, Deb Brovick, sees Madisin as a leader among her peers and believes she’ll make an amazing teacher.

“She has overcome physical adversities herself and is focused on helping students become physically and mentally healthy,” Deb said. “She works two jobs to help support herself and is also completing her practicum experience.”

Madisin also credits Blackhawk with teaching her a lot about time management.

“I have had about six online classes and more in person, which means I have had to make sure I have time to complete all of my work and be able to go to work,” she said.

With plans to graduate in the fall of 2023, Madisin then wants to transfer to a four-year college to finish her bachelor’s degree in Education.

The main advice that Madisin would give potential Blackhawk students is not to be afraid to ask questions.

“College can seem stressful, but at BTC you can ask for help when you need it, and they will help you!” she said.
