Real-Life Experiences Led Student to Behavior Tech Program

With two special needs teenagers at home, Blackhawk’s flexible class options were key to A.J. Draeving’s decision to return to school.

A.J., who received her Early Childhood Certification from Blackhawk, is now in the Behavior Technician Program.

“I wouldn’t be able to be as successful of a student without that flexibility,” said A.J., who is a graduate of Evansville High School.

A.J. uses Blackhawk’s MyEdChoice model, which allows students to attend each class based on the modality that works before for them:

  • in the classroom at a set class time,
  • live during class time using video conferencing, or
  • online at anytime

With limited outside support for her two teens, these options allow her to choose how she wants to attend class and doesn’t lock her into one format.

A.J. also said that she felt insecure and intimidated about being an older student, but she said she’s been supported and enthusiastically encouraged.

Her instructor, Deb Brovick, said A.J. is an outstanding student who goes above and beyond everything she does in school and juggles her family, work and school life with ease.

“Her classmates often mention that they miss her if she's not in class,” Deb said. “She has a lot of personal and professional experiences in the field of education and enjoys sharing these in class.”

Upon graduation, A.J. plans to continue her education but is most excited about being able to make a difference in her community.

“I don’t really have a clear idea of what that is going to look like, but I am here for the adventure,” she said.
