As a medical assistant, you play an important role in the day to day operations of the doctor’s office or clinic. From the front desk to the exam room to the laboratory, you are the link between the healthcare provider and their patient, their professional associate and their equipment and medication suppliers. It’s a fast-paced job, as medical assistants handle business and administrative as well as medical duties. On the administrative side, you will be in charge of scheduling and receiving patients, obtaining patient information, maintaining medical records, ordering supplies and equipment, overseeing the office, and handling insurance matters, office accounts, fees, and collections. On the medical side, you will see assist with examinations and treatments, take health histories, perform certain diagnostic tests, carry out laboratory procedures and sterilize instruments and equipment.

As a student in Blackhawk's Medical Assistant program, you will receive the training employers are looking for – the technical abilities and the soft skills that take you from being good at your job to being great. You’ll learn in our state-of-the-art lab and exam rooms and during your practicum, which is full time during the last five weeks of the program, you’ll get valuable on-the-job experience. Student placement is extremely high, as graduates of our program are in great demand to work in doctor’s offices, immediate care clinics, ambulatory centers, health insurance companies, business and industrial health centers, and other medical settings.

Program Goals

The goal of the Blackhawk Technical College Medical Assistant Program is to prepare competent, entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

Program Requirements

  • The following program requirements must be met:
    • Obtain minimum scores or successful completion of the designated courses with a grade of C or better.
    • Writing Requirement: COMPASS 70, ACT English 16, 10.5 TABE, or Written Communication (801-195)
    • Reading Requirement: COMPASS 80, ACT Reading 16, 10.5 TABE, or Medical Terminology (501-101)
    • Math Requirement: COMPASS (Pre-Algebra) 40, ACT Math 16, TABE 8.9, or Pre-Algebra (834-109)
  • caregiver background check is required prior to registration into certain program-specific courses. Please note: drug testing may also be required by clinical sites. There are fees associated with these tasks. For more information, please contact the program faculty and/or program advisor.
  • Program co-requisite: CPR and First Aid for health professionals (must be completed prior to Medical Assistant Practicum). The standard for promotion in the Medical Assistant program requires a “C” in all courses. Satisfactory completion of all on-campus courses and a physical examination are required before externship. 

Students may also elect to talk to their counselors regarding taking associate degree courses that may substitute for the Technical Diploma courses.

The Medical Assistant (MA) program is offered at the Janesville campus. Due to scheduling differences and the timing of the externship component, students must register for all required MA classes at one campus location only.
